President Barack Obama and President Lee Myung-bak of South Korea met yesterday to discuss the North Korean threat. With North Korea withdrawing its funds from foreign banks in advance of sanctions and promising to "weaponize" all of its plutonium, matters are not looking good. Obama has pledged to withhold the type of humanitarian aid that North Korea has bargained for in the past in exchange for its compliance. Kim Il-sung has consistently gone back on his word. North Korea now apparently stands ready to test another long range weapon and its threats of nuclear conflict cannot go ignored. Both China and Russia have called for a reconvening of the six nation summit to deal with this threat.
And what of the two American reporters jailed in North Korea? It became clear the other day that Kim Il-sung meant to use them as bargaining chips. What hope do they have of freedom with the current state of affairs?
